SHANNON SCHOOL
PRIZE -GIVING CEREMONY * The end of a year's study by the pupils of, the Shannon Public School was marked on Wednesday by the annual prize-giving ceremony, which took piace in traditional manner in the infant school build-' ing. Among the official party present were Mr. Dickenson (headmaster) and Mrs. Dickenson, Messrs. A. Jeffrey (chairman), Bowler (secretary) and F. J. Lucinsky, of the school committee. There was not a great deai of interest taken by the public, and only a few parents and friends were at the ceremony. The proceedings opened with the rendering of items oy the school choir. The chairman, Mr. Jeffrey, welcomed the visitors on behalf of the , committee and expressed regret that the school was losing the services of Mr. Dickenson, the headmaster, who was leaving on retirement at the end of the year. Mr. Jeffrey then introduced Mr. Dickenson to those presenf. The attitude towards work was the main theme of Mr. Dickenson's address to the pupils. The young people of today were building the New.Zealand of tomorrow, remarked Mr. Dickenson, and he expressed a wisli that each and every one
would enjoy the best of health and Isuccess in making the journey j through life. Mr. Dickenson said that on normal school days during the past week or so children would commence to call at his home at 'about eight in the morning, offer- ' ing tributes of flowers, and on behalf of Mrs. Dickenson and himself , he expressed sincere thanks for that tribute. "One cannot spend over seven years among such children without being impressed by them," said Mr. ; Dickenson. He voiced regret at ' leaving Shannon where he had made so many friends. Mr. Jeffrey then presented the prizes won during the year. As . the prize winners came forward they were greeted with applause. ! Scandard- 2: Top pupils: Girl, , Barabara Parr; boy, Allan Foot. (Most improved pupils: Girl, Shirley Anderson; boy, David Lee. Standard 3: Top pupils: Girl, Mary Hennessey; boy, Puhi Ropoama. Most ipiproved pupils: Girl, , Patricia Edmonds; boy, John Heri bert. j Standard 4: Top pupils: girl, i Pamela Hewitt; boy, Graham Pratt. |Most improved pupils: Girl, Patricia (Moore; boy, Rex Eascon. ! Standard 5: Top pupils:- Girl> jBeryl Charter; boy, -Ian Sayer.-i '.Most improved pupils: Girl, Joy iSell; boy, Kora Ropoama. ;• Standard 6: Top pupils: Girl, Kay Quinlan; boy, Ronald Cameron. Most -improved pupils: Girl, Joan ,Radford; boy, Barry Lucinsky. : The dux medal and best progress : prize was awarded to Ronald Cameron. Agricultural Club Prizes Mr. Jeffrey went on co present the trophies won in the Horowh'enua Boys' and Girls' Agricultural Club's i calf and lamb rearing competitions. The chairman stated that the many ! beautiful trophies which were to be won each year should offer encouragement for the club next year. The trophies won were as follows: — Challenge rose bowl for senior care and attention: June Teague. The Dairy Company Challenge cup for the best all round calf: Nora Sell. The Farmers' Union challenge cup for the best lamb : Roger Kennard.
