Adtiliral Byrd's Antartic expedition made its first discovery last night — an ufich'arted underseas mountain range rising almost vertically from tlie Pacific floor, which. was ■located by sounding equipment abo'ard two of Admiral Byrd's sfiips as tliey steamed 1800 miles west oi the Soiith Afiierican coast. Navigation authorities estimate that the range rises more than two miles from the ocean fioor, is roughly 15 miles wide and probably more than 30 miles long. Existmg charts show only that the ocean bottom in the area is considerably more than 12,000 feet below the surface.
