I FlNAL MEETING OF THE YEAR ! Mrs. J. A. Easton presided at the Shannon Women's Institute's final meeting for the year, which was held in Laurvig's Hall recently. Mrs. Easton directed the secretary to write to Mrs. R. Andrew, a member of the institute, who is ill in the Palmerston North Hospital, expressing the gathering's wishes for a speedy recovery. Mx*s." H. Foot was proposed as a j new member and a transf er was j received from Mrs. Church from [ the Bunnythorpe W.I. to Shannon. | Mrs. C. Stern read the financial jreport and stated that seven 10s parcels had been sent to local men in J-Force. The rose show secretary (Mrs. D. Fitzgerald) read the balance sheet, which disclosed a small credit. This was considered very satisfactory in view of the bad weather conditions which prevailed right up to the day of 'the show. Mrs. Fitzgerald thanked the variOus members and all others for their assistance. The president thanked Mrs. Fitzgerald and Mrs. .T. Creagh for the work they had put into the flower show, and one and all for their help both in labour and in money.
Final arrangements were made for the children 's Christmas party to be held in Laurvig's Hall from 2 to 6 p.m. on Friday next. Each member arranged to invite a child. Miss Joan Radford entertained with a recitation. Aftemoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames L. A. Stratford and R. Lang. The president honoured two elderly guests, Mesdames Secord and H. Robinson, presenting them with bouquets of sweet peas, accompanied by a small gift, and invited them to spend an afternoon with the W.I. members at any time. Mrs. Pettit, their oldest member, was similarly honoured. There were also small gifts for Mrs. King, Stout Street. and Mrs. Jensen, who were not able to be present. Mrs. J. T. Bovis played Christmas carols, in which members joined. The competition for January will be for a piece of Christmas cake. A committee comprising Mesdames J. Creagh (leader), D. Fitzgerald, A. E. Tremewan, W. Radford and T. Bell was set up to make arrangements for the entertaining on the standard committee and members for the January meeting. A competition was won by Mrs. T. Bell and a mystery parcel, the contents of which were given by Mrs. J. A. Easton, went to Mrs. R. P. Lester on the draw, several having guessed the ; correct answer. Monthly competitions resulted: — Cluster: Mrs. A. E. Tremewan .1, Mesdames J. GriJSiths and ;A. Richards 2 ,(equal) , ■ Mesdames C; Stern, 'j. Siiiclair and K. Thomson 3 TeqUal). Single bloom: Mrs. J. Swindlehurst 1, Mesdames G. Veale and J. Sinclair 2 fequal') , Miss Joan Radford and Mrs. ' C. Stern 3 (equal). Shrub: Mrs. C. Stern 1, Mrs. K. Thomson 2. Christmas novelty: Mrs. J. Sinclair 1, Mrs. J. T. Bovis 2, Mrs. A. E. Tremewan 3. Thrift article: Mrs. J. Sinclair. Mrs. Easton closed the meeting by wishing one and all a merry Christmas and a happy New Year, followed by the singing of the National Anthem.
