President Truman's Council of Economic Advisers, established to advise on economic trends, predicts in its first report that a temporary recession may come in 1947, but that courageous action by business and labour groups can hold it to moderate proportions, if not avert it. The report added a promise of a long term future free of boom and depression must be based on the foundation of , free competitive enterprise without the benefit of direct Government interventipn, but with the Government in a supporting and spark-plugging role. "We must realise the real magnitude of our productive power, and keep it going to produce all the things that only the more favour'ed have enjoved in the past." " •
