Inquest Opened The inquest into the death of an elderly woman, Miss Rosa Sneath, who was found dead in her bath yesterday, .was opened in Levin today, before the Otaki district coroner, Mr. H. Nicolson. After evidence of identification had.been taken, an adjournment till tomorrow was ordered for the purpose of a post mortem examination. Buildings Worth £82,193 Permits for new buildings to the value of £82,193 have been issued by the Levin Borough Council during the period from April 1 to November 30. They covered 49 permits for new dwellings and five for other new buildings. In addition 32 permits of a total value of £5614 were granted for alterations and additions. Business at Abattoirs During the month of November the following stock were slaughtered at the Levin Abattoirs, the figures for the same month of last year being given in parentheses: Cattle 576 (586), calves 13 (60), sheep 4743 (4559) and pigs 524 (130). The fees for the month amounted to £981 11s ld as compared with £541 2s in November, 1945. " Petrol Engine Explodes Two men were injured on a Hunterville sheep station on Saturday when a petrol engine operating a shearing plant exploded. The more serious injuries were received by Mr. L. D. Dalziell, who was badly cut about the face and unconscious on his admittance to the Wanganui Public Hospital. The other injured person was Mr. W. Orbell, who was wounded in the neck. The accident occurred on Mr. Dalziell's property, "Blair Athol " Poukiore. - Cigarettes Diverted. The ill wind of the wharf workers dispute hit Auckland smokers full in the face with the revelation that 3,500,000 cigarettes, consigned to Auckland importers, have been diverted to Wellington in the motorship Waiwera. The cigarettes will be dispatched to Auckland from Wellington when transport can be arranged, though that will probably be too late to relieve the pre-Christmas nicotine famine. Overtime Ban Operative The overtime ban imposed by the Wellington Tramways Employees' Union went into effect last night. The men refused to do call backs or extra work in broken shifts and at the same time declined responsibility for maintaining the trams to timetable. The effect of this was not immediately apparent on some lines but on others, in particular on the bus services to the outlying suburbs, gaps in the service caused inconvenience to people going home at the peak after work hours. Theft of Meat The theft of a cqrcase of lamb from the aba'ttoirs" on November 20 was reported to last evening's meeting of the Levin Borough Council by the manager (Mr. F. E. Larsen), who said that extensive police enquiries had proved utisuccessful. It was also stated that a ewe carcase had disappeared earlier. The Mayor (Mr. H. B. Burdekin) commented that recent dishonesty in the town had apparently spread to the abattoir. The council approved claims by the owners for^ the value of the carcases. Library Still Busy - "During November we usually find that the number of issues is less than in the winter," said the tibrarian (Mrs. M. Whitaker), in a report to this month's meeting of the Levin Borough Council, "but this year the month has been wet and cold, so that reading was as popular as in previous months." The issues for the month were: Country Library Service 562, Levin £>ooks 5697 and juniors 457. Thirty new members joined the library during the month, six of them juniors. Estimate for Ambulances The managing-secretary of the Palmerston North Hospital Board (Mr. A. J. Phillipps) told the board yesterday that at present there were four ambulances ready for service and one unfit for use. The ages of these ranged from seven years to 14 years. "I would suggest that the members look at the ambulance fleet, all the vehicles of which will be available today," he said. "The mileages done by the vehicles and the amount of maintenance work we are now experiencing are such that at least two of the ambulances should be replaced during the coming year. After the inspection I would suggest that the board consider making the necessary provision in the estimates for two new ambulances r next year."
