OTAKI'S SUMMER MEETING

Only two favourites were successfu at the Otaki Maori Racing Cluh' meeting on Saturday and douhle figur dividends were returned on four occa sions, the major surprise heing the wh of the extreme outsider High Assay who returned his handful of supporter a dividend close to a century. Featun performances were those hy Imperia: and Barrage, who dead-heated in th principal event, the Raukawa Haridi cap, while the hrilliant success oi Saludos in the Huia Handicap drew at tention to his prospects in the Mana watu Cup. Conditions were ideal anc there was a large crowd. The totalisa tor handled £65,386 10s compared witl £49,632 the corresponding day last year an increase of £15,754 10s. Backers Astray. Backers were well off the marlc in the Tararua llighweight Handicap V'oJtaire winning at double figure odds while the niinor plaeegetters were alsc at good prices. Hazaboy attempted to lead throughout, and entering the back stretch waishowing the way to Transinitter, Fox ada, Grcy Donne, Master Raymond and Voltaire. Passing the half-niilc the leader was still bowling along clcar oi Foxada and Master Rayniond, witli Grcy Donne, Voltaire and Lanoma heading the remainder. Master Raymond ran past Hazaboy approaching the honie turn, while Voltaire also improved his position to closely follow the leader. Unce in the straight Voltaire had little dihiculty in drawing to the front, and lie went on to score comfortably i'roiu Master Raymond, who battled on to liold off Foxada for second. Havildar was fourth, and then came Casilda, Grcy Donne and (Sergeant Jack. Favourite Fails. Another double ligure dividend was hoisted vvhen Flak got up in the last stride to down the paeemaker Royai Fiasli in tiro Kuku Maiden Ko. 1, for which the liot favourite King Tissa spoilt las chauces by hanging badly. Royal Flask was smartest to begin aud showed the way past the half-mile from First Aet, Golden Gasket, King L'issa, Lady Darrington and Flak. The mst named gradually improved his position to be handy to Royal Flash, r'irst Aet and King Tissa turning for home and, with a sound iinishing eilort on the inside, gradually wore down Roval Flash to gain a narrow decision. King Tissa was a fair third, with First Aet, iilank Cheque, Golden Gasket and Arvadale following. Tanith Improves. Backed down to favouritism after her showing at Woodville, Tanith had little diJliculty in annexing the Waitohu Handicap from the topweight Golopicr, the pair having the issue to themselves over the last half-mile. Colopier began best from the outside aud on settling down was the leader from Tanith, with Grand Affair, Bonny Banks, Minlon and Matanui heading the othei;s. Racing to the turn Colopier aud Tanith were clear of Bonny Banks, Grand All'air and Malanui, and in the run to the judge Tanith had no trouble in gaining the upper hand from the topweight. Theioway came from several places back at the turn to be a nioderate third, with Lady Burford, liuishiug fast, next aud then Malanui, Minlon, Follow fcsuit and Bonny Banks. The Big Event. The main event, the Raukawa Handicap, was fouglit out betweeii Imperial and Barrage, and in a thrilling iinish ihe judge declared for a dcad-heat. L'he uniucky ruuuer was Broieiieid, who was never out of trouble and then linished very fast in third. When the field had settled down Deliiiquent was in the lead from Fort Royal and Fortuue's (Smile, and then came Riverview, Merry Robin and Imperial, the rear beiug brought up by Barrage and Fiudon. With the exception of A anaaki, who raDed up ou the outside of Fort Royal, there was no change in Ihe order going along the back. At the three lurlongs Riverview slruek trouble aud was forced back ou ro •Broieiieid, Nanaaki going clcar to lead ilito the straight. The field closed up al the distance wliere Imperial dasked to the front, but Barrage then came ou the sceue aud this pair went over the line locked togethor. Broieiieid made a fine effort to get up and nose Garnforth out of third, and theu followed Merry Robin, Miss Delaware aud Nanaaki. Another Surprise. Fiiiishing well uuder a hard ride, the Awapiinl-trained Welcome Guest got up iu the last l'ew strides to dowu the favourite Lord llollaiid in the Kuku Maiden No. 2 and return a dividend approaching a score. Lord iiolland, Old Dooley and Audacious were the iirst to become prominent, and passing the lialf-niile Old -Dooley was clear from Lord Holland, with Jinuy Jiuks, Beau (Son, Kila (Sliields aud Erin's Pal closest of the others. Approaching the home turn Lord Holland run past the paeemaker and was Iirst to straighten up for the judge from Jinuy Jinks and Kvening (Star, with Welcome Guest improving his position rapidly. The favourite looked all over Ihe wiimer at the distance, but was uuable to witlistand a late challengo from Welcome Guest, who went on to win decisively. Erin's Pal ran on for third, ahead of Jinny Jinks, Mr. Buzz, Ella (Shiclds and Beau Son. A Runaway Win. A win dividend just short of a century was returned when the extreme outsider High Assay scored a runaway victory in the Otaki Hack Handicap. Tahli began best, but High Assay soon ruslied iuto the lead and passing the half-mile was clear of Lady Oratory, Tahli aud Rothuic, tlfc field being well strung out. The paeemaker increased his advantage approaching the straight and in the run home drew right away to win by a wide margin. Tahli linished a shade too well for Lady Oratory for second, and then came ldle Along, Begowncd, Rothnic and Superium. A Close Finish. The favourite Tortago ied from end-to-end in the Te Horo Hack Handicap. but had little to spare at the finish from (Sailor Boy and Rockanui whom the judge was unable to separate for. second.

Tortago soon puiled himseif to tlu front and showed the way into thf back stretch from Rockanui and Iror Duke, with Sailor Boy and Moutoa Lord in elose attendance. Salut 1 d 'Amour improved his position from th( s rear to follow Tortago, Roekanua anc] B Sailor Boy approaching the straight, r and there was no ch'ange. in the ordei a as they lined up for the run to the » judge. Although hotly Challenged, Tor- ® tago battled on to stall off Sailor Boy a and Rockanui, who went across the line * on terms. Beau Raide was a moderate J fourth, and then came Moutoa Lord, " Iron Duke and Salut d 'Amour. f Outclassed Oppoaition. The Huia Handicap proved easy for ' the Awapuni-trained Saludos, who was 1 followed home by his better backed stablemate Arco. 1 The smart, est to begin were Blue » Bonny, Sir Boswell and Stony Broko, but passing the half-mile Blue Bonny was elear of Peter Robinson and Sii i Boswell, with Stony Broke, Saludos, , Lady Nahleen and Arco following in , that order. Approaching the straight i Peter Robinson moved past Blue Bonny. while Saludos, Beau Le Havre and • Stony Broke were Within striking disi 'tance. On straightening up for the run home, Broughton asked Saludos for an effort aud the Mauawatu Cup eandidatc i quickly strodc to the front to go on and : win with ridiculous ease. Arco put in good work over the final furlong to get , up and shade Beau Le Havre for second, aud then came Stony Broke, In- : cline, finishing fast, Peter Robinson and Master Baron.
