Building Permits During the month of November the Horowhenua County Council issued 19 building permits representing new buildings to the value of £8780. For the same period last year 11 permits of a value of £4780 were issued. Sawmill Fatality A millhand was kiiled in the Lake Timber Company's No. 2 mill at Tokaanu yesterday. He was | Thomas Rees, aged lo, of Tokaanu. iRees was working in the mill and ! had driven his axe into the flitch of a log when it came out suddenly 1 and he f ell back. Another log i which was being lowered by a ■ winch fell on him, crushing his head on the bench and fracturing his skull. 2Ie died before a doctor ; and ambulance -arrived fronl ; Taumarunui. Polish Army Remembers i The founder of the Polish Army League, Mrs. W. A. Jacques, yester1 day received cables from General 'Guch and Soldiers' Social Welfare, i conveying greetings on the occasion i of the fifth anniversary of tlie i founding of the League. In addition a parcel of souvenir bracelets, one for each member of the committee, has .cqme to hand. Ea"dh' •link of the bracelets is a tiny jplaque on which is the emblem of each Polish division and of the I Eighth Army with which they served. Club Nights on Mondays The Levin Combined Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club has decided to revert to Monday night of each week for its club nights, the programme commencing at 7 D.m. At the commencement of the
season the club changed its meetings to Tuesday to allow Palmerston North competitors to be present, but so far none have travelled to Levin. There will be a full programme of running and cycling races on Monday, as well as field events, and the public can look'forward to an enjoyable evening. Next Saturday evening the club will co-operate with the Horowhenua Marching Association in staging a varied entertainment at the Levin Park Domain. Tennis "Glamour Girl" Greatest inierest m the Nunneley Casket tennis yesterday centred in Ihe mateh- between Miss Evelyn Attwood (Auckland) and Mrs. J. Robb (Hutt Valley), which the latter won only afler the second set had gone to the 26 Lh game. Miss Attwood is the daughter of Mr. F. C. Attwood, who was headmaster of the Ohau School until a few years ago. She learnt her tennis on the Ohau Club's courts, and was coached by her father. Miss Attwood is No. 1 .in the visiting team, and her chic appearance on the courts has caused her to be dubbed the "glamour girl" of New Zealand tennis. She plays a dashing and forceful all-round game, and her drive-volley must be seen to be appreciated. I Tragic Accident The death occurred on November 30, on the Bruce Highway, near Yandina, Queensland, of two boy.*> aged nine and five, who were well known in Dannevirke and who only a few weeks ago returned to Queensland from a visit to Dannevirke. They were Maurice Hope Hardy and Norman Alexander Hardy, sons of Mr. Ebenezer Hope Hardy, faimier, of Woombye, and were kiiled instantly wThen a truck driven by their father collided with another vehicle late in the evening. The boys, wheil the collision occurred, were thrown on to the bitumen. No one else was injured. Both boys had attended the Dannevirke North School. Their mother is an old Dannevirke girl, who was born and educated there, her maiden name being Miss Ruby E. F. Ramsay, daughter of the late Mr. C. Ramsay, of Tennyson Street. Last Easter she and her husband and family arrived in Dannevirke and resided for some months with Mrs. Hardy's mother in Tennyson Street, and only nine weeks had elapsed since their departure for home to the date of their tragic „ death.
