In New York show business, Adele was relatively an unknown quantily. She rose only as high as becoming Gypsy Rose Lee's under - study in "Star and Garter." All she had to do was stand around backstage just in ca.se Gypsy should become ill or be prevented by some other circumstance from doing her job. Adele was not entirely obscure before that. She was rated as one of New York's top models and No. 1 show girl. Her show business started when she won a dancing scholarship, and later her dancing teacher dubbed her "the girl with the mil- j lion dollar legs." She really wanted | to become a very good actress, but | modelling, dancing and show work, kept her busy. She has now made the grade from an unstudy to a promising film actress. Her ambition at school was to become a newspaper reporter, but she said, "The funny part about it is that my parents were against it because they wanted me to become a dancer and actress, which is con- 1 trary to the usual story I've heard.. It didn't take me long to find out! that my parents were right. Danc- | ing and acting are the things I care for more than anything else now." Adele has played at the Grosvenor House and Savoy Hotel in London, Les Ambassadeurs and Le TouquetCasino in France, the Casino at Biarritz, and the Copacablanca in Rio. In spite of, or because of, all this activity and travel, Adele's idea of ideal entcrtainment is to spend a quiet evening at home. Occasionally she likes to break this routine by going to a movie — she likes mysteries. She still gives vent to her former athletic urge, now modified mainly to liorseback riding and golf. She likes walking, with her dog, Ziggy, and docs a lot of readihg, everything frr«m the classics to comic strips. She is no diminutive blonde.
