Council's Monthly . Meeting The monthly meeting of the Otaki Borough Council was held on Wecmesday night, the Mayor, Mr. J. F. Aoinore, presiding. _ Others present were Crs. Young, Gimblett, Lari/osh, Bennett and Cooki Also Mr. Alex Wilson (town clerk) . ^eave of absence was granted Cr. £ctk U»2T£li cl Cr. Gimblett reported that ne nad ■nspeeted the tanks at ihe reser/oir, and had found them all full xfter a hot day. Cr. Baruosh asked if anything had jeen done about the part of the Jtaki River which was rapidly cuting through the properties of Messrs. Perkir.s and Anketell. He ,aid that if it was not checked »vould cause damage to other properties at Rangiuru. The townrlerk stated that the Public Works Department's engineer had said ,hat neither of the two bulldozers it present at work on the river, xbove the bridge, cauld be allowed jfT the job for some days. The newly-formed Horowhenua vdarching Association wrote advisng that at a meeting held in Levin, the Mayor (Mr. Atmore). had been jieciea a viCv. presiaenc. Ihe lecier dded that any teams formed in Otaki would be afnliated to the Horowhenua Associaiion, and through that body to the N.Z. Marchmg and Recreational Association. It was desired that each ,-jcal body appoint a representative o ihe committee of the association, hus making two representatives from eacii town. It had been agreed to do all possible to help in the formation of teams in Otaki, and t was desired that a meeting bc held at Otaki to form a club.— The council was of the opinion that a public meeting should be held. Cr. Cook was asked to bring the matter oefore sports clubs. A letter was received from the Rotorua Borough Council stating that accommodation • had been xooked for the representatives of l.he council who would attend thfe Municipal Conference. — Received. 1 The Under-Secretary of the | Department of Internal Affairs wrote stating that the Public Works Deparim mt ho.d agreed, at the request of the Otaki R.S.A., to convert its present soldier's plot of the upright type of headstone to a lawn uype, using bronze piaques at ground level. I A letter from the Palmerston North Catchment Board advised j.hat it would acquaint the council of the da'.e of the proposed inspecjtion of the Rangiuru creek. — ! Received. Th« building inspector, Mr. W. J. , Guinan, wrote rclative to the conver.uon of the dwelling at Tasman I Beach, into flxts. The work jinvolved in mo.kirg these flats had . been done wi hout a permit, and ' 'here was a darger to health by : overcrowding. He suggested that i •ction be ialccn against the owner i for breaches of the building by- • laws. — To be investigated with a ! vicw to action being taken. I Mr. G. W. Banks wrote stating | that the drainage water from the lold beach store ran over his sec1 tion, and asked that the matter be | >;ivon attention. — Agreed to. : 1 Mr. A. Lumley, secretary of the O.aki Brass Band, wrote asking if ihe council would consider the ; u'cction of two standards for lighti in different parts of Main ; Street. Foster wrote stating that he had inspccted the life-saving igear at Tasman Beach and found ' ' t to be in good condition. Wills wrote expressing •cgret that he would be unable to ! -elieve the town clerk at Christmas, as he intcnded going north to -Miipara for a holiday. Oreetings to 1 he Mayor and staff were extended j by Mr. Wills. — Mr. Anderson was i xppointed. i Inspector Davis reported that the I voneral behaviour in regard to motor traffic had been satisfacLory. but cyclists were still causing coiicci u by riding without lights. The main offenders were children, ■•lie parents of wliom had been notified. There had been one accident between a local taxi and a motor car, but no oue iiad been injured. Four traffic offence tickets had been issucd, two in the Otaki nrea and two outside. Twelve warnings had been issucd to motorists. The report was received. The owcrseer (Mr. B. R. Bell) reported that DoniaiiT Road, Bell Street and part of Kirk Street had been sealed. He said that one window in the rest resort building had been broken and some of the timber trellis work smashed. A window in tliee Cnuncil Chambers had also been broken. Accounts amoun'ting to £66.4 Os 6d were passed for "payment. f NMiss Thompson, the librarian, was granted leave of- absence to
l * allow her to attend the conference of the Libraries' Association. Cr. Bartosh called the attention jof the council to the bad statfc of the road to Rangiuru, especially that part situated in the Horowhenua county. The Mayor extended the season's greetings to the members of the council, the staff and Press, all of v/hom reciprocated.
