Before tfie business was commences, the chairman referred to ihe sudden death since the lasc meeting of members' friend and colleague, Mr. F. Desmond. It had come as a great shock to all who knew him, said Mr. Parker. Mr. Desmond had rendered splendid service as a representative of the underwriters, and had appeared to enjoy his association with the board. Mr. Cierke also made reference to the tragic suddenneSs of Mr. Desmond's aeath, and the sense of loss it had caused. The 'meeting stood in siience as a m'ark of respect to his memory. Mr. N. C. Procter, offiee.r in charg'e of the Levin Farm, Kimberley Road, wrote asking if the board would agree to provide fire protection to the farm, the Mentai Hospitals Department undertakifig to meet all expenses in connectiofi With attendance at fires. The chairman pointed out that Levin- was the brigade's first call, but it should give what prouection it could to the farm. He said there was some equipment at the farm and it would be necessary to ensure that certain of the staff there were taught the rudi'ments of fire fignung. The drafLing of a favourable reply was left to the eliairmartxvand secrvatary^,,-!... ~Mn Fireman W. W. NockelS tend'ered his resignation from the brigade and asked that he be granted a clearance to enable him to agaifi join later if he desired. The resignation was accepted With regret and the clearance agreed to. Payinent of accounts totallin'g £125 13s 7d was confirmed, while accounts amounting to £122 14s 5"d were passed for paymefit. The Audit Office returned the board''s statement of accounts and balance sheet for 1945-46, duly aud'ited withoiit comment. Superintendent's R'eporf The superintendent (Mr. W. S. ^almons ) reported as" f ollows f Or the quarter: "We have ha-d quite a gocd period, and activities are moving smoothly. The engine and equipment are ifi good order', but the forffier has had to reeeive some attention. "The usual practices and meetings have been held during the quarter, and. the attendance . ha-s been good. There was one fire, the brigade making. a^ good save.- The new unifofms afid caps have arrived and are satisfactory. Two firemen have resigned. Fireman J. Trim, with five years' experience, who has come to Levin to reside, is an applicant to join the brigade. "On behalf of the ofiicers afid men, I desire to convey to board members the compliments of the season and best wishes for 1947." The board received the report.
