WHO WILL BE SPEAKER?

The defeat of the Speaker, the Hon. F. W. Kchramm (Parnell) raises the question of his likely successor in the event of the Labour Party remaining in office. Traditionally, this position in the House is usually held by a member of the legal profession. The Labour Party, however, is not in the position of the National Party in having a number of lawyers withiu its rauks. The Chairman of Committees in the old Parliament, Mr. R. McKeeu, would probably have first claim to tlie position of bpeaker, but there is a strong body of opinion favouring the appoint- . ment of the present Attorney-General (Mr. Mason). . If the Gaverninent desired to continue to have a lawyer as Attorney-General there would be nothing to prevent it appointing one of the Legislative Council for this purpose.
