Labour 42— National 38
With the figures to hand for the official counts in the doubtful seats of the recent general election, the state of the Parties is'now regarded as Labour 42, National 38. Mr. Williams, Labour candidate for St. Albans, who has lost' the seat by 86 votes in the final count to J. T. Watts (National) after leading by 66 votes in the fi'rst count, said t'onight that he had only received advice of the poll by telephone so far. When he received the official report of the scrutineer he would consider whether he would apply for a Magisterial recount. "However, where the margin is as big as 86 it seems hardly nkely," he added. AJthough the re.turning officer expects there are still a few votes to come, these will not affect the result. Late votes were allocated as follows: — Postal: Watts 198, Morgan Williams 133. Absentee: Watts 382, Morgan Williams 276. Declaration: Watts 3, Morgan Williams 1. Soldiers' declaration votes: Watts 7, Morgan Williams 1. Servicemen's votes received to date were two to one in favour of Williams • who received 44 compared with 22 for Watts. Raglan has been retained by the Labour Party by a majority of 39 v'otes.
