Reeeived Fridav, 9.45 p.m. NIAY YORK, Dee. 5. More than 15,000 workers were laid off their respective shil'ts at Ihe Ford River Rouge plant tonight and 20,000 more follow lomorrow. This is the vanguard oi* 750,000 who will l)e thrown idle in the Detroit area beeause oi' rail freight res'trictions which are parulysing the automotive and paris industries. While other industries are threatened with shutdowns aircraft nianuraeturers eonsider they will be able to produce l'or 30 or more days by fiving in supplies. Natural gas began to move from Louisiana to Ohio th rough the "Little Inch" pipeline today and is expoeted to flow through the "Big Inch" in a few days. The appeal by Mr. Witliam (Jreen, secretary oi' the American Federation oi* Labour l'or a eoni'erence between the owners and John L. Lewis brought no immediate response i'rom the Government, the employers or Lewis, says the Assoeiated Press. It seems unlikely that it would have been issued without the approval or at Jeast the knowledge oi* Mr. Lewis who is oue oi' the A.F.L. vieepresidents.
