CALF COMPETITIONS
LEVIN SCHGOL WINS GROUP FINAL JUDGING RESULTS In bright sunshine the , grass playing area at the Levin School was the scene of a large gathering of spectators and eompetitors .yesterday for the final judging of calves in- the competitions condiicted annually by the Horowhenua Boys' and Girls' Agricultural Club. The preliminary judging in the district was completed a short time ago, the results having already been published. > The district comprises .an area consisting of all the schools between Paraparaumu and Shannon. From these schools the first,, second and third best calves in the care and attention class, and the best calf in the dairy type section were selected at the preliminary judgings and brought to Levin for the final choices. The judge, whose decisions were acclaimed by the successful and unsuccessful candidates and those present, was Mr. D. C. Stuart, Rangitumau, Masterton. Some 57 calves were assembled for the occasion. During the morning a competition for judging the points - of a dairy cow was held for the children, and three entrants were judged first equal. The-y were Robert Cameron (Levin), Heather Horn (Opiki) and Pat Williams (Opiki). The various competition results are given below: — • Senior grout) champions. — Levin School (Harry Stratford, Douglas Lang and Barry Geange) 1, Paraparaumu School (Peggy Hoodman, Valerie Potts and Joan Walton) 2, Te Horo School (Andrew Faith, Ron Hazelwood and Grace Faith) 3. The shield which is presented for this section was won in 1945 by Otaki. Champion calf, care and attention. — Andrew Faith (Te Horo) 1, Lorraine McLaughlin (Koputaroa ) Grace Faith (Te Horo) 3. The cup for this class was held by the Otaki School in 1945. Best dairy type. — Brian Bregmen (Manakau) 1, Barry Geange (Levin) 2, Audrey Cameron (Poroutawhao) 3. The barometer for this competition was held last year by Muhunoa East School. Junior champion, care0 and attention. — Jennifer . . Burnell (Ohau) 1, Ashley Fogden (Otaki) 2, Graeme Irelands (Manakau) 3. This competition was won last year by the Koputaroa School. The Levin School was awarded the Nicholl Shield, which is a challenge shield for the school showing the greatest improvement in gardens and grounds and other agricultural and pastoral achievements.
