Opposing the Polish and Wliite Rus sian measures to isolate Spain as long as the Eranco regime is in power, the United Xtates delegate to the Political and Security Committee, Senator Oonnally, said approval of either pi-oposal would produce 110 positive results be yond eutting off the . Spanish people from the rest of the world. Poland urges the inunediate breaking oif of diploinatic relations by all mem bers of United Nations, while Wliite Russia dcsires the imposition of sanetions. Senator Connally said .that either course might well lead to civil strife, with serious international cuiuplications. The various Spanish factions might lio arrayed against eacli other and the support of various members ot United Nations might be enlisted. Uzechoslovakia 's delegate, Alnie. Ger triule Sekaniova, support ed the Polish. resolutiou, arguiug that a strong stand was the onlv way to avert civil war in Spain. India's delegate, ,Mrs. Pandit, said India would support any unaniinons action designed to end General Eranco 's rule, bnt she questioned whether dijilomatic or even economie breaks with Spain would achieve that end. India would not reeomincnd any step stre.ngthening General Eranco. Xorway's delegate also supportod thc Polish resolution. Britain supported a United States' resolution proposing that Eranco resign in favoui of a provisioua) government which would be replaced by a freel.t elected regime. Sir Hanley Shawcross said . Britain sliould do uothing which might precipitate the shedding of blood over the question of Spain 's form of government whether the blood of British soldiers or Spanish people. Belgiuni and Oanada supported the United States' resolution but the committee adjounied without reaching a decision.
