CHRISTMAS FAIR

SALVATION ARMY'S SUCCESSFUE EFFORT The Salvation Army's Christmas fair, held in their hall in Bath Street yesterday, was described by the corps' offieers, Oaptains B. Williamson and L. Jackson as the most sucee'ssful one they had heid. The attractively-deeorated stalls drew large crowds and saies were maintained at a brisk pace throughout the afternoon. The feature of the fair was a large decorated Christmas tree, laden with parcels which could be purchased for the children at a small charge. In the unavoidable absence of .the Mayor, Mr. H. B. Burdekin, the fair was opened by Captain Jackson, who thanked ail those who assisted in the organisation -of the fair, which she felt sure would he a great success. A chocolate cake competition for the best baked cake, made to a standard recipe, was won by Mrs. M. Tomlinson. Mrs. F. Burnham was second. The stall holders were:— Sewing: Mesdames I. Bishop and Z. Learmonth; produce: Major E. Ward and Mrs. F. Rose; sweets: Cap.tains B. Williamson and L. Jackson; toys: Mrs. A. K. Toms; novelties: Mrs. R. King ; jumble: Mrs. M. La Roche; afternoon tea: Mesdames F. Henski and S. MudgW.ay-. cakes: Members of the Women's Christian Temperance . Union. Mrs. G'. Muirhead was in charge of the Christmas tree. In the evening an enjoyable social was held.
