Playing brilliant tennis al'ter a nervous start Coliu Long, the Yictorian member of the Auslralian Davis Cup squad, beat Bill Talbert (Ameriea) 3 — (i, G — 1, 7 — 5, 6 — 2, in the third round of the Victorian singles chanipionship. Long was giveu an outside chance against Talbert wlio was rated Xo. 2 last year in Ameriea to Frank Parker (Kramer was not ranked). In the quarter-fihal doubles Jack Kramer and Ted Schroeder wlio will probably play for Ameriea in the Davis Cup doubles, beat Dinny Pails and Lionel Brodie G — 2, 10 — 8, 13 — 11. The result has eiihanced Australia 's Davis Cup chanees because Australia cau put a far better pair tlian Pails and Brodie on the court.
