OIL-BURNING LOCOMOTIVES
FIRST IIAULING EXPRESS The work of converling the seeond loeomoti ve for use. on tlie Main Trunk line into an .oil-bnrner has beon e.onpleted, and tlie engine is at present being run-in 011 goods services between Paekakariki and Palmerston Xorth. Those l'uns also provide the opporlunity for training engine erews in the new method of (iring the locomotivc and in handling it generally. While the engine is standing al the depots engine erews are given the opportunity of familiarising themselves with the oil-burning method, and after that -thev are alile to gain practical experienee under ac-tual runnilig eonditions.
The first locomotive converted iiito an oil-burnev is proving verv satisfaetory. It has becn used several tinies to take the Anekland express from Wellington to Palmerston North and has made one ti'ip to Taihape. In addition, this locomotive has hauled inany goods trains between Wellington and Palmerston Xorth. It is "now eonsidered sufii eiently run-in to hani express tratlic. " ' ■ 1
