PRICES VERY SATISFACTORY
By Telegraph—
WELLINGTON, Dec. 1, Oontinermtal buyers operated freely with representatives of Frencii iirms seeking the best quality woois wheu the lirst Wellington wool aale of tlie main series ior 1UR5-17 was held on Saturday. Frices were in most cases w'ell abuve tlie fluor xirice wliich had 'been lixed and very I'ew lots were passed. \'alues were very lirm at rates which ruled for tlie recent Napier saie. Half Ihe wool catalogued was from the new clip and the remainder was stoek, wool of which a very good clearance was uiade tliough ail the greasy wool ih this class was sold "on description". Througliout tlie sale which occux>ied six liours a good animated tone ivas niaiutaiued. The bidding opened _ briskly and lcept going at a iively pace for most of the day. There was a strong inquiry for good-class hogget woois ivliich sold readily. Nine bales of an attractively grown lot of this wool brouglit up to 27id. The top price for greasy wool was 2t)d which a New Zealand mill paid for a small lot of halfbred ewe. Wether wool of the same ciass realised 28id. Most of the greasy wool was erossbred but occasionaily a line branded as straight breed came under the hammer. The top price of the sale was 3d^d for a line of super halfbred slipe. Other similar woois realised 34A. Skirtings went to a Dutcli buyer but American and Continental buyers provided most of tlie competition for greasy woois. Bradford firnis did not operate to the same extent us usual. Tlie local niills put in suceessful bids, occasionaily taking sonie of the higlier prieed woois and carpet woois. The total oifering was 22,G(1'0 bales states the oflicial report issued by the Brokers' Assn. It consisted of greasy, slipe and scoured woois. New'season's woois were mainly early sliorn lioggets and drv sheep from Wairarapa, Manawata aiul Raugitikei with sonie odd lots from the Marlborough aud Nelson districts. Bome Rangitikei and Wairarapa vvools opened up partieularly well, but nianv from the other districts, especially the East Coast, were rather disaijpointing. The adverse weather experienced during the last two lnonths liad left its mark. All sections of the trade were represented on the buying benches, but the principal competition came from the Contiuent anil Ainerica with Bradford operatiug luodorately. Local mi 11s were also active on suitable stvles. Tlie prices realised were most salisfaetory and steady at recent rates. Uecp wooily lioggets did not sell as well as shorti lioggets. In many casos coarser woois sold well above the liner grades. Bkirtings met with keen Oontinental competition at very good prices.
