RIOTING IN SHANGHAI
Received Sunday, 9.50 p.m. SIIAXGHAl, Nov. 30. Police charged with lixed bayouets and elubs to break up a niob of several Lhousaud t'hinese who rioted before the Wliangpoo police station in protcsl against the recent arrest of (ino street vendors for illegal trading. One of the rioters was killed and at least 100 in jured. The . niob alleged that six vendors-' di'edi.in' prkson from Inuiti ngs. The' rioting followed ffee/.ing weather in which at least 50 person s died in'tho streets from exposure. The rioters wrecked 100 motor cars, and Jooted or vvrecked numerous shops. The police vainlv tried to end the disturbances with teargas, lire lioses and rifle lire. The rioters conliscated a theatre for their "dield heathpiarters " and threatened to wreck anv store uhich opened. The Ma.vor (-Mr. Iv. C. Wu) failed in his attempts to bargain with the rioters and threatened a still enforcement of martial law which had been in elToct technically since Ihe Japaneso surrendel-. Tio blamed the f'ommunists for fomenting trouble. United States Arniv and Navy personnel and their de pendants ha\-e been restricted to quarters indehnitelv to keep them awny from the disturbances.
