CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 29. A splendid doubles perfonnanee by Miss M. E. Burrell and Mrs. H. Lant irc beating two of New Zealand 's best plavcrs, IMesdames J. Graliam and Robb, enabled Canterburv to Jead Hutt Valley by f'our rubbers to two on the first day of the mateh in defence of tlie Nunnelev easket. The singles matches were sliared, Hutt Valley 's first and second plavers l>eing too good for ( .'an - terlmry and Canterbury's tliird and fourth winning after much more olose. Iv eontested matches. Canterbury won both doubles, IMiss Burrell and Mrs. Lane overwhelming their strong oppon ents with brilliant and well controlled attacking tennis in.one of the best women 's doubles matches ever seen at Wilding Park. The weather was fine and the courts in good order though slow. ' A" strong uor'-west Aviud made playing eonditions difficult.
