New Steamer Arrives The Union Steamship 'Company's 3000-ton freighter Kaimanawa has arrived at Auckland from the United Kingdom on its first voyage to New Zealand. Immediately after launching the vessel operated under the British Ministry of War Transport in British coastal and Channel services. The vessel will no w be used in the New Zealand coastal service and inter-colonial trade. * Restoration in Masterton On the figures announced this morning, restoration has been carried in Masterton, which has been a no-licence area since 1908. The voting for the proposal was 6239 and against 3858, this making 121 votes clear of the necessary threefifths majority. Postal and absentee votes still to come in may possibly affect the result. Poiice Remove Posters The poiice at an Eden electorate polling booth removed party posters bearing the portraits of two candidates, saying that their display contravened the Electoral Act. Rolice headquarters, it was reported later, had admitted a mistake had been made, and gave permission for the replacement. However, a still later message stated that the poiice do not admit a mistake had been made in removing the posters. The posters were again on display after removal. St. Mary's Guild's Thanks The members of St. Mary's Guild extend grateful thanks to all who assisted in making their annual efforton Tuesday last such a success. The takings exceeded those of last year, and all the stalls practically sold out of goods. The following helpers were omitted from yesterday's report: — Afternoon tea: Mesdames T. Eskimos Vanishing Race The natives of Canada's vast subArctic and Arctic zones, the EskimOs are an "economic asset to Canada," says Dr. R. S. C. Corrigan, adding a warning that "the business in the north could not be carried out without them." Dr. Corrigan, superintendent at Norway House Indian Hospital, says the Eskimos population is declining rapidly. Tubercul'osis and mahiti*trition are taking a heavy toll, a'hd,' particularly since the use of firearms became widespread, Esk'imo hunters shoot every'thing in sigh-t, food stocks are being depleted seriously. There are practicaliy no caribou left, and seal and walrus are becoming scarce. Matches in Bread A slide box of American matches found embedded in a loaf of brown bread bought at New Plymotfth was the subject of comment when, shown to a meeting of the National Council of Women a't New Plymouth. The loaf is to be shown to the Health Department. It was possible that the matches could have fallen into the dough accidentally, while it was being mixed, it was poin'ted out, bu't it was considered more than likely "that the baker had been smoking, and that in that case other fol'eign objects could have entered the mix'ture. Instances of foreign matter found in food and reported to the Health Department, resulting in action, were given.
