Formation of Association - INTERIM COMMlTTEE SET UP ■ t*;.'; '■ " 'v With the setting up of a tentative cornmittee at a meeting held in Levin on Friday, a. new organisation, to be known as the Horowhenua Marching Association, was formed. This body c shduld prove an asset to the district, and do much to foster the two glrls marching teams at present Iji existence and any others which are in the process of formation. Realising the need for a'body'to assist the marching teams, some members of the social cornmittee of the Levin Athletic and . Cycllng Glub, which unofficially- assisted the teams and their coach, Mr. J. Ma'cFarlane, at the recent display on ■ the Levin Park Domain, decided to approach Mr. MacFarlane and •• off er its assistance, whiel> h'e gratefully accepted, with the result that a cornmittee was set up comprising MesSrs R. Murray (chairman) , A. L. Dobson (secretary) , J. MacFarlane and W. Marks (trustees) and Messrs. D. Convery and'L. Humphrey and Misses M. Lang, 3. Smith and J. Perigo. , Considerable discussion ensued on the name the cornmittee "would go under, and in order to avoid clashing with any other sports body the above was decided on, although . those present stressed the fact that they wanted to work in harmoriy . with all sports bodies in the district, and also would assist npt only sports bodies, but any amateur organisation which v/orked toi* or provided amusement, or assisted generally, in making Hofowhehua a district in which citizens woUld be proud to live. Just as ".the * Junior Chamber of Commerce advancing the civic claims of the
town, so this committee's aim. is one that will provide a variety ;of entertainment as good as offered to the public in other centres. " It was moved by Mr. MacFarlane and setonded by Mr. Marks, that a marching teams cqmpetitlon ' be held on Saturday, December . 21, provided the necessary permissiqn can be obtained, to be known as the Horowhenua marching champiohihips, and that the business people Tf the district be approached to donate a cup to the yalpe of ; £15, to be inscribed as being donated by them, for annual competition..- \ prize to the value of £10 for first and £5 for second will also go- with the cup, while £2 2s ahd £1 Is'will bc thc value of the awards for best Tostumc and to the coach of the winning team. • ■' It was also decided to obtaln the Horowhenua Scottish Society's permission and co-operation to include - Highland dancing events on the programme. The Levin Combined Amateur Athletic and Cycling Ciub is also to be approached and asked to cooperate by running athletic and cycling events during the afternoon and evening. All trophles will be provided by the Horowhenua Marching Associa'.ion, and the only expense to be Caced by the assisting bodies will be ",he work involved in running their part of the programme. The next meeting of the ' conimittee will be held on Friday iiext at 8.30 p.m. at Mr. R. Murray's residence, Oxford Street North, and. ^n invitation is extended rto' -ahy citizens interested to be present.
