BRITHDAY AND ENGAGEMENT
HAPPY PARTY AT SHANNON Miss Phyllis Allerby, younger daugliter of Mr. and Mrs. J. P. Allerby, of Buckley, Shannon, was the central figure in happy celebrations held in the Parish'Hall on Saturday evening, when more than eighty guests extended birthday greetings and offered felicitations on her recently-announced engagement to Mr. S. E. Fitzsimmons, of Motunui, Taranaki, formerly of the R.N.Z.A.F., who was present to sliare in the festivities. For the occasion Phyllis wore a pretty frock, of Vrose uncrushable crepe, her only ornament being a glittering three-stone claw set diamond ring. Mr. and Mrs. Allerby, the latter wearing a black satin-backed marocain frock, heavily beaded, and a shoulder spray of red roses and carnations, received the guests, the majority of whom matched the youthfulness of the guest of the evening. Mrs. T. Fuller and Miss Doreen jWard played the plano and Mr. A. H. Mills the accordion for the several dances, while variation was provided with elocutionary items by Miss Ngaire Peach and Miss June Roberts, and a tap dance by Miss Billy Peach. A Monte Carlo was won by Mr. Taylor, partnered by Miss I. Jeffrey and a doll dance by j Mr. Bruce Smith and Miss I. Jeffrey. In recognition of fulfilling the 'duties of M.C. an appreciated gift jwas bestowed on Mr. W. H. Roberts 1 per medium of a parcel game. ! Bounteous hospitality was offered the guests, the delectable homemade dainties being enjoyed. Mr. F. C. Peach proposed a toast to the guest of honour and her flance, and wished them both the best of luek, the toast being honoured in traditional manner. A sweet-scented posy was presented j by Miss Joan Radford before the llights were turned off for the cereI mony of lighting the candles on the i beautifully iced and decorated .birthday cake, the work of Mrs. I Allerby. The candles wert lit and ithe cake cut to the singing of "Happy Birthday to You." One 1 more dance and "Auld Lang Syne" !just before midnight brought the party to a close. i Among the visitors from a dis- : tance for the occasion were Mrs. H. J. MifcS' Alleiby was the recipient of a host of beautiful gifts.
