WIN FOR BILLY BROWN.

(Special to "Chronicle")

PALMERSTON N., Nov. 21. Persistent aggression aud cleaner puncliiiig earuecl Billy Biowa, of Invercargill, 9.3, a elose points deciaion over Joe Grant, Australia, 10.1, in a vyellattended catclnveight contest at tlie Opera House last niglit. > Brown bored in from start to finisli and made the light. He missed with a nuinber of his punclies, "but connected with more than he reeeived in exchange. Grant showed definite superiority at infighting but s.eemed to be laeking the extra sting in the open. After a cautious opening in the first round, Browjn ripped into aetion with light left and right hand blows to tlie head. Grant cornered Brown on tlie ropes, but did little damage and Brown worker clear to land a nlce left to his opponent 's jaw. Grant missed with liis left aud early found Brown a ditlicult target. Grant did better in round two and seored several times with a lightning straight left to the jaw. Brown evened up matters by eornering the Australian aud ripping in rights and left to the body, alhough there was little sting behind the blows. Left rips to the solar plexus proved a good scoring weapon for Grant in the third round, in which there was plenty of in-fighting all in favour of the Augtralian, A left hook to the jaw by Grant rattled Brown in the fourth, but he quickly recovcred and forced his opponent to the ropes. Grant missed badly with right swings, but was getting the upperhand in close. Grant was slightly uiore aggressive in the fifth, but Brown steadied him down wlien he forced him to the ropes and connected well with lefts and rights to tlie liead. Altliough Grant was very. elusive, Brown picked him oif with a nice left hook in the sixth, but Grant evened matters by scoring with his favoufite punch, a Jeft rip to the body. Bounds seven and eiglit wero like the others, with Brown continuing to force tho light and makj ing his opponent miss with his counter j leads. ' In the nintli, Grant came out for actj ion and connected well with lefts to the | jaw and a short rip to tlie body. ToI vvards the end of tlie round Brown retaliated with a liard left to the body which made his opponent wince. Both mixed matters willingly in the final round and, altliough Brown took Grant soveral times to the ropes as he liad done all tlirough, the clever eovering of the Australian did not give tlie Invercargill boy a chance to land an efi'ective punch. Tbe verdict in favour of Brown proved popular. The referee was Mr. G. Watchorn. Amateur Preliminaries. C, Waghorne (Warne's) 4.8J, beat E. Bolstead (Pahiatua) 4.9?. on jioints. M.
