BARQUE AS TRAINING SHIP

— Press Association

Bv Telearavh

CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 2U. Representations will be made to the Government to eonvert the barque L'ainir into a training vessel for 5U or 60 cadets. This decision was made liere tonight at a meeting sponsored by the Canterbury brancli of the Navv League and attended by representatives of many organisations. The need for a training ship for youths was eniphasised by Captain A. R. Cliampion, Lormer master of the Pamir. He considered that the barque should be kepl in the shipping trade and that the payment for the cadets be made from freight fees. The Government might make some monetary loss on the venture but the educational vaiue to youths would be great. He added: "If things go 011 as they are now, I can see the L'aniir tieiug up at Wellington and being left to rot, " s'aid Captain Cliampion. The decision to approacli the Government was unanimous.
