FIRE AT OTAKI
o — LARGE WORKSHOP DAMAGED Shortly before four o'clock yesterday afternoon an alarm was sounded on the sirA, it heing discovered that Messrs. P. H. Stocking and Son's large workshop in Matene Street was alight. The brigade was quickly on the scene, but, unfortunately, the first two lengths of hose burst, thus handicapping the brigadesmen. However, a third length was quickly run out, but by this time large volumes of smoke and flames were issuing from the building. The brigadesmen worked valiantly, and although a large portion of the building, chiefly iron, was saved from complete ruin, the fine, up-to-date machinery was badly damaged, while large stocks of timber, tools, etc., were destroyed. Although nothing appears definite as to where the fire originated, it is surmised by some that it started from smouldering shavings at the rear of the building. The building, etc., is underinsured by £500, while £500 damage has been done to the structure, and £800 to the machinery and stock. There was no insurance on the stock.
