AUGKLAND, Nov. 19. . A modiiication in the newlv adopte'd salary scale for teachers was announced by the Minister of Education, Hon. 11. G. R. Mason, when speakiug at Avondale tonight. This modiiication related to tlie aslary of senior assistant mistresses in certain groups of schools, whose position had not been improved to an exteni commensurable -with the general improvement. The Minister said the number of salary gradations had been reduced because their; multiplicity had given rise to the evil of teachers chauging from school to school too frequently. The salary gradG on which these particular senior assistant mistresses Avere previously placed, no longer existed and there had been considerable complaint and discussion in rcference to their place in the new scale. As the result of the diSeussions the problem had been solved by raising these teachers to the next liigher grade in the new scheme. Improvement was also being made in the salaries of senior male assistant aud the infant mistress in such schools, thus preserving the previously existing relationship between these three positions in the group of schools concerned. The new scale and- staffing schedule was iu furtlierauce of the policy of increased staffing and removal of what was aeknowledged to be the greatest weakness in the education systeni, the large class. Th,e new scale brought -into oue system the' staffing and salary scales for all tvpes of schools, primary and post primary.
