WOMEN'S INSTITUTES

OTAKI'S MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of the Otaki Women's Institute was held in the Angliean Hall recently. Although the weather was very wet; there was a good attendance. The meeting opened with the usual proceectings, and the president (Mrs. Lumley) welcomed all members and visitors. • Two new members were elected, Mesdames Marshall and Davies. Mrs. Percival acted as secretary for the afternoon and after the minutes were read it was arranged to hold a children's party and Christmas tree for members' children on December 5. The institute was very fortunatein having Mrs. Horn from Wellington to give an interesting talk on the Maori institutes in the far north. Mrs. Horn explained how these Maori institutes were taking a great part in reviving native handicraft, instructing members in modern hygiene in the home and encouraging home gardens and other useful ideas. At the conclusion of her address Mrs. Horn received a hearty vote of thanks and Mrs. Lumley presented her with a bouquet of flowers as a small token of appreciation. The competitions were judged by Mrs. Horn and resulted: — Best flower: Mrs. Nairn; best shrub: Mrs. Nairn; best soft toy, Mrs. Wallington.
