BOROUGH COUNCIL DECLINES LAND PURCHASE
The opinion' - of the borough solicitofs in regard to the proposal to purchase land to enable Sussex Street to be continued through to Hannan Street, one of the proposals recently rejected by the ratepayers in the loan poll, was received at a meeting of the Levin Borough Council last evening. They stated that it would be necessary for the council to decide whether or not its previous decision to purchase still stood. In view of the result of the poll, Cr. F. E. Parker moved that the Council not proceed with the purchase. It was seconded by Cr. W. Telford, who remarked that he thought the cost was too great. It was. stated that one of the sections would cost £350 and the other £100. Cr. A. O. Powell moved as an Amendment that the council go into the possibility of purchasing the
, sections from revenue. He said he had spoken to several ratepayers • who were not opposed to this proiposal, but were against the purchase of the section in Chamberllain Street. | The amendment was seconded by { Cr. D. J. Gardiner. I Cr. Parker pointed out that the council would Iose the rates on the land and would have to pay the cost of roading it. Cr. F. D. Chainey said he was opposed to large blocks of unroaded land, but in view of the decision of the ratepayers h£ did not feel the council could proceed. On being put to the meeting the amendment was defeated by a majority. Crs. Powell, Gardiner and Hudson voted for it and Crs. Bowen, Cockr.ell, Telford, Chainey and Parker against it. The motion was then put and carried, the voting being the same.
