ENGLISHMEN MEET N.S.W.

RAIN INTERFERES WITH PLAY Received Friday, 8.30 p.m. SYDNEY, Nov. 15, A solid, ehauceless innings of 53 not out by Arthur Morris, the young lefthander, was a feature of the flrst day 's play in the match England versus New South Wales. . Morris, 'who scored a eentury for the Australian. eleven iu Melbourne this week, further cemented his claims to be'the Australian opening batsnian in the first .Test in Brisbane a fortnight henee. The English bowling was really good but Morris shaped, confldently throughout. Play today was limited to two and a half'. hours because of rain. Hamuiond won the toss for the fif'th time in succession but, surprisingly, decided to send the home team in to bat. The wicket had been covered and it appeared to play easily. The outfleld was dead as the result of overnight rain. New South Wale.s* opened in heavily overcast weather and were soon in trouble. With two clown for 16 Hammond's decision to send the home side in seemed viiidicated! England 's fast battery, Pollard, Bedser and Edrich, were very accurate, only 12 runs being scored in the flrst half hour. Barnes, usually a most forceful' batsnian, scored a single in 25 minutes before he was caught in the gully. Morris was also subdued but he was never in trouble. During the pre-lunch period in which only 57 runs were scored, the light was not too good and this, together with the hostile attack, mitigated against fast scoring. The third wicket partnership of Alor ris and Pettiford added 57 runs in, 70 minutes. Pettiford played soiue delightful strokes before he was bowled. The total had climbed to four for 97 by 3.10 p.m. when a steady drizzlg drove the players from the lield. The rain continued aud play was abandoned for ihe day at 5 p.m. The English flelding was exceiicnt, Washbrook being outstanding. P. Smith was made twelfth man for England.
