BERNBOROUGH UNEQUAL TO WINNING TASK

L. M.

M.)

(Special-

-From

WELLINGTON, Last Night. When he ventured into handicap comp'any carrying 10.10 in the Caulfield Cup Bernborough, the iatest challenger on the 19 successive • winning appearances of Desert Gold and Gloaming, had his run stopped, leaving Desert Gold and Gloaming's records still standing the test of time. After the Caulfield Cup ordeal Bernborough's breakdown came in the L.K.S. Mackinnon Stakes at Flemington. Bernborough had smashed his way through the opposition in 15 successive races leading up to the Caulfield Cup and it looked as though he might beat the long standing records. It was not,.however, to be. ' It was a pity that his owner, Mr. A. O. Romano, and trainer, H. Plant, did not decide to pass over the Caulfield Cup and keep him for weight-for-age races, though even if that had been done Ihe breakdown at Flemington may have taken place just the same. The failure of Bernborough to reach the totals of Desert Gold and Gloaming was not surprising as many other outstanding horses have met the same fate. However, he reached 15 wins and with Carbine is ranked next to the leaders. Of the 37 times Bernborough started in races he won 26, was twice second and twice third, his earnings in stake money being £25,504. Phar Lap failed in his attempt after 14 successive wins, while Limerick ( 13 ) , Firestick ( 12) , Eurythmic (11), Beaulivre (11), Defaulter (10), Kindergarten (10) and Grand Flaneur (9, unbeaten) were othors to build impressive winning sequences. Bernborough's career has been a whirlwind one, his rise to fame being just as sensational as his fall. His career now at the stud will be followed with interest.
