MIRACULOUS ESCAPE
Milk Van Struck By Train DRI.VER EMERGES UNINJURED A miraculous escape was the cxperience of a young man, Mr. R. Judd, son of Mr. and Mrs. H. Judd, of York Street, Levin, when the milk van he was driving was struck by a train at the Queeu Street ievel qrossing late yesterday afternoon. The accident occurred abo.ut 4.50 p.m. Mr. Judd was driving the vah, one of the lighter type, westwards alohg Queen Street, and failed to observe the approach of the Wel-.ington-Auckland express. Formnately the cab of the vehicle^was over the line, but the train st-ruck uhe rear portion with a severe impact.'the noise of which could be heard a considerable distance away. The vehicle was pUshed clear, the superstructure being extensively damaged. Mr. Judd emerged from the smash shaken but uninjured. The train, which was drawiiig the Governor - General's car, was brouglit to a standstill in its own length, and was delayed about fifteen. minutes as a result of the accident. ' The crossing has been the scene of a number of acpidents over the years, and is recognised as a dangerous one, particularly when approaching it from the eastern side as the view is restricted to some extent by buildings.
