NOVEMBER MEETING HELD The Shannon branch of the Rcturned Services' Association held its November meeting in Laurvig's Hall on Saturday evening. The president, Mr. S. W. Barber, handed the duties of chairman over to Mr. J. Ritchie, vice-president. Others present were Messrs. R. Hook, C. Guerin, R.-M. Lange, J. H. Sinclair, E. E. Morris, J. A. Reid, O. N. Tipplcr, J. J. Moynihan, S. J. Spcncer, [). N. Purccll and E. J. Gunning. Apologies for absence were rcceived from Messrs. J. J. Jones, V. J. Bateman and R. L. 'Quinlan. Tlie secretary (Mr. E. J. Gunning j reported that the roll number of thc branch stood at 230, 184 being Shannon membcrs and 46 Tokomaru members. It was also reported that the postal vote on the proposed R.S.A. club rooms stood to date at 50 in favour of the club and 10 against, while 55 members were willing to contribute towards r.he building. A letter of thanks was received from Ihe Women's Institute for tlie donation made by the association oi' a poinLs prize for its forthcoming flower show. Thc secretary was instructcd to write advising the institute that the threc suggestions put forward by it were agreed to by thc association. Thc secretary advised that headquarters of the N.Z.R.S.A. had replied to thc letter in connection with the numbering of badges for the women's -section and Merchant Navy members." o A letter was received from the Shannon Borough Council, granting permission for the branch to fix a memorial tablet to the present war memorial bearing the names. of the men who lost their lives in World War II. The secretary advised that the work had been 'put in hand, and should be cowpleted shortly. A discussion took place as to the drawing up of rule books for the local branch, and it was decided to enquire from the N.Z.R.S.A. as to whether it could supply rules for the guidance of branches. A motion of sympathy was carried for the families who lost their loved ones in the recent drowning tragedy, the secretary 'being instructed to write letters' to the parents. It was noted that Sgt. E. E. Allen was returning home after long service overseas on Monday, and this left only Mr. K. J. Mitchell as the remaini'ng serviceman overseas other than the J-Force personnel. It was pointed out that Messrs. N. A. Price and W. L. Carter were local

members at present in hospital. At the completion of the business members were entertained by the members of the women's section at supper. Women's Section Membcrs of the women's section of the R.S.A. gathered in Laurvig's Hall on Saturday evening for their November meeting. Mrs. C. Guerin presided and those present were Mesdames Morris, Third, Griffiths and Quinlan. Apologies were received from Mesdames Sell, Ritchie, Thomson and Chester. The secretary (Mrs. Quinlan) reported that the Rose Da.y had been very successful and that.in all £12 15s, 9d had been collected. Following a discussion it was decided to hold the usual chi'ldren's Christmas party ' and primary arrangements were made. The date decided upon was Saturday, December 14, and it WaS ^agreed to hold the function in the Druids' Hall commencing at 7.30 p.m. Invitations are to be sent to all members. Arrangements were also made in connection with the purchasing of toys and the other necessary goods. > Du'ring the evening the usual flower competitioh was held and the results were as follows: — Mrs. Quinlan 1, Mrs. Sell 2, Mrfc. Third 3. The ladies later joined the menfolk for supper.
