Prime Minister Afraid of Maori Vote
By Telegraph—
GISBORNE, Nov. 11. The Prime Minister, * Hon. P. Eraser, speaking to Gisborne Maoris at Poho-O-Kawire meeting liouse, said he deeply regretted the nomination of Sir Apirana Ngata as a National Party eandidate. Ile realised* the great work Sir Apirana had done for the Maori people in the past and wished they were friends rather than opponents. Most Maori people admired Sir Apirana Ngata as the Europeans did but objeeted to the politieal eompany he was keeping. "Mncli as we may respect him, wfi cannot liave ' him voting
against us and pntting us out if possible," said Mr. Eraser. After paying tribute to the Labour capdidate, Mr. Omana, Mr. Eraser added: "We don't want to be enemies but I say Sir Apirana Ngata would be of more value to his people outside the House than in it. What an end it would be to a glorious career if he became a private in the army of Toryism ! We feel he shoulc blusli to be praised by those who have tradueed and slandered his own race. ' '
