SURVEY OF LABOUR IN INDUSTRY
Received Fridav, 11.25 p.m. LONDO^T, Nov. 8. Alinistrv of Labour statistics for October reveal two ehanges affeeting British industry 's labour force. The first is increases in wages rates and average earnings for the first time bringing average earnings gbove £5. The latest figure i& 100s 5d whieh is 3s 9d above the wartime peak. The in crease is partly attributed to industry 's chatiging back from womhnpqjvpi: to manpower and also to increases in the houi'Jy rates. The figure compares with 92s 7d in January aiid 96s ld in July Compared with the 1938 figure, it shows an inc'rease . for di fferent elasses of workers of 74 to 89 per eent. The seeond major trend shows the effeots of the iqW hirthrate of 1922-32. Figitres eompgring 1937-38 «:ith 194546 show that 70,000 fewej' uoys and 34,000 fewSr gitlh ent'ered industries, while the total boys in the age grohps and 14 and 15 years, fell by 59,000 iind girls by 18)000,
