ROSE DAY APPEAL MADE IN LEVIN TODAY
R.S.A.'s ANNUAL EFFORT Made by the blind and crippled people of England, Alexandra Roses were used for the Returned Servicemen's Rose Day appeal, which is being held throughout New Zealand today. The appeal organiser, in Levin, Mrs. H. J. Lancaster, and her 20 assistants were operating from the Levin R^S.A. club roorns early this mormng, and judging from the pumber of roses being worn, the appeal appeared to be meeting with the public's support. , . - „ The proceeds will used foi general purposes. Queen Alexandra's Rose Day in Britain was inaugurated in 1912 to raise funds for hospitals and kindred organisations, and also to celebrate the completion of 50 years' residence in Britain by King Edward VII's consort. Normally the roses sold in New Zealand have been made by the women in -the various disti'icts» Those on sale today, have cost the association no more than the maker's charges plus exchange. No charge was made by the shipping companieS for their transportation to New Zealand, nor were harbour board charges, saies tax or customs duty imposed. Customs agents also arranged for their free transportation tc the Dominion headquarters of the assdciation.
