Cabinet has decided to recommend to the Labour caucus, saies tax cuts amoimting to ^18,000,000 ineluding almost the. to.tai a^ofitjpgi, oi;, the ipftles. tax 011 clothing materials. Income tax rates are expected to remain at the present level miless caucus rejects. Cabinet reconunendation. Mr. Chifiey toid the Ministers that saies tax cuts would give real relief asi clothing prices were by far the biggest item in the wartime cost. of living rise.; Several Ministers claimed this was not enough and that income tax, partieularly in the lower wage groupk, should also be reduced. Mr. Chifiey 's view is expected, however, to prevail. Caucus will meet tomorrow and the proposals may go before Parliament next week. Reductions in customs and excise or other forms of indirect taxation have not been considered.
