U.S. STRIKES UPSET GRAIN SHIPMENTS
— Reeeived Wednesday, 7 p.m. LOKDUK, i\ov. 5. The Britisli zone m Germany, partieularly the Eulir, is facing a grave lood crisis due primariiy to the nonarrival of the October grain slnpmenis bocause of the Aruerican slupping etrikes, says the Times' Dusseldorx correspondent. Unless grain ships are immediately diverted to Germany, by the middle of November Germans already undernourished will faee starvation. The arrival of 3(5, UUO tons • of grain and flour in the past fortnight, togetlier with the diversion to the Ruhr of grain from those parts of the /.oue with a surplus, staved off' a erisis but the bread supply is most irregular. Undiseiosed reserve stoeks of grain aiul ffour, nntil reeently, met periodic crises but they are now eompletelv exhausted. British otticials do not hesitate to eoii- i fess that now is the most serious j situation yet faeed. Two vessels earry- 1 ing 900U tons of grain are expoeted by ; the middle of November whon there j will be a deficieney of 21)00 tons. Thereat'ter no vessels are selieduled for j arrival. Defieieneies of from 13.000 to 22,000 tons are foreseen for the middle and end of Deeember respeetivelv. British ollieials regard as a mistake the raising of the ration last month from 2335 calories daily to 1550 but even the inereased seale is little enough wliereon to maintain life. It works out for eacli individual daily at potatoes lOloz, bread 13oz, cereals 21o/.. meat •?.oz, fish loz, sugar 1 oz, elieese l-14oz and skimnied milk 4^oz. The correspondent adds that the normal dav's food in a working home consists of: Breakfast, drv bread and ersatz colfee; dinner, potato soup; supper, potato soup. Worlcers are alreadv on the verge of starvation and inereased rations in the miners' can teens are doing little psychologieal good beeause the miner is depressed when he eontrasts the rations his family is eating at home.
