NOVEL BOWLING GREEN
Sometking novel in tbe way of bowling rinks has been evolved and put into practical use by Mr. S. Dick, of the Shirley Bowling Club, Christchurch. There is no grass on this "green" — it is surfaced with earth and sawdust. The new " green" was not expensive to lay down. It is easv to maintain, and gives to bowlers a pleasure all the year round. Within one month of his starting work on his new ' 1 green, ' 5 Mr. Dick was able to haiid~over the rink to the Shirley Club. As a result, members of the club have been playing since July. The "green" plays true and its paee and draw vary little from the normal grass rink. The cost of maintaining this new rink, when compared with that of a grass green, is relatively low. This, of course, is going to open the door for bowling in those districts where there haven 't- been numbers sufficient to justify the establishment of a normal greem
