Latest additions to the National i swimming championships for senior men j and women are a oue metre divo and a j 100 yards nxcdloy. Tlio divc will lirst , appear on the programme when the ■ championships are held at Dunedin in j 1018 — Otago 's eentennial year. These inuovations were approved at Ihe anI uual eonference of tJie New Zealand j Swimming Association, held at Christchurch during the Labour woekend. Mr. C. Atkinson (Hawke's Bayj was re-eleeted president. Tne Otago centre atiempted to have th'e "butterfly" stroke approved for Ireaststroke races, but after a short discussion the remit was withdruwn at the suggestion of the secretary (Mr. Baxter O 'Neill) so that the ofiicial stnnd of the Englisli Union couid be J ascertnined. It was suggested that there miglit be i-oine dilliculty iu staging the medley because ot" Ihe diilerent lengths of pool in the various centres, but it was poiuted out that 'tlie Newmarket batk at Auckland was the only pool of Oiympic size in the Domiuion, and tliat when the timo came to hold the championships at Auckland the medley could quite easily be licld at the tcpid baths.
