SOFTBALL COMPETITION
GOOD DISPLAYS IN OPENING GAMES The first games in the Horowhenua Softball Association's championships opened in fine weather on Saturday last. There were some good displays of softball, and most games attracted a large attendance of the public. Ajax travelled to Otaki to play Aces, the winners of last year's competition, and after a hardfought match, Ajax proved to be the winners by one run. It was impossible to single out any one player as both. teams were very„ ey'enly .matched: The other game at Otaki, -between 'Otaki Ladies A and B, resulted in a" win 'for the A team' as the B team was no match for the much more experienced A's. The B team should improve as the season progresses. The Levin games, played on Rugby Park, were well attendea and some good team work was alsc witnessed. In the ladies' match Tui A went under to Raukawa, buTui A with a little practice should prove a hard team to beat. In the B grade, Achilles B were soundly beaten by the Otaki Colts, whose team work was very good for.younr players. The A grade » match oetween Kimberley and Achilles A saw some excellent team combination by the Achilles pack, it being hard to single out any individual player. Although beaten, the Kimberley team was not disgraced, anc put up a stubborn fight against z more experienced side. Detailed results were as follows: Ajax 16 (15 runs and one homer), beat Otaki Aces 15 (lf runs) ; Achilles A 33 (23 runs and 9 homers), beat Kimberley 9 (7 runs and one homer) ; Achilles B 8 (seven runs and one homer), lost to Otaki Colts 25 (25 runs) ; Raukawa Ladies 12 (9 runs and three homers), beat Tui A 6 (six runs) ; Otaki Ladies A 33 (33 runs), beat Otaki Ladies 18 (8 runs anc' handicap of 10) .
