EXHIBITION OF N.Z. ART

' By 'the gehefosity of Messrs C. M. Thompson and J. Stackhouse, a private collection of New -Zealand art, which probably has no superior in New Zealand, is to be open to the public at Horowhenua College on Wednesday. The collection contains exaihples of the work of most of the outstanding artists of the present time. Frances Hodgkins, a New Zealander who has won an international reputationmn European art centres, is represgnted by a striking work "Market at Corncarneau." A group of works by the late Miss Stoddart, whose work is eagerly sought by collectors, shows every phase of this talented artist's development, and includes a magnificent flower study of " roses and an impressive landscape, "Mt. Sefton," which would grace any national collection. T. McCormack is particularly well represented. fHis large study of Irises is an outstanding work and there are splendid examples of his landscapes. The collection is.rich in .examples of the work of C'edHc. Savage, a large landscape of "MotuJipi" being noteworthy. Watev colours by Jaiiies Nairn-, one of the best known of an earlier generation of New Zealand artists are rareiy seen, as this artist worked mostly in oil; the collection contains two fine water-colours. Other artists who are weil represented are Miss D. K. Richmond, Nugent Welsh, S. MacLennan, R. Maclntyre, B'arraud and Gully. mcluded in the exhibition will be the two Maori portraits by Lindauer, which were bequeathed to the eollege as part of the Ramsbotham Bequest. The exhibition will be open to the oublic in the library of Horowhenua College from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon and from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. 011 Wednesday evening. Admission will be by silver coin collection, the proceeds to go towards the purchase of pictures for the college.
