HALIFAX BOMBER RETURNS
DEVELOPED ENGINE TROUBLE Wlieu the Royal Air Force bomber Hercury was about 250 miles out from ,Xew Zealand 011 its return fiight to Australia yesterday morning, trouble developed in oue of its four engines and the aircraft was forced to return to the R.X.Z.A.F. station at Ohakea. It is expected that tlie trouble will be rectilied by this niorning, and the crew liopes to take off for Laverton in Australia in tlie afternoon. The .Mercury, which has been on a radio niission to Xew Zealand, took off from Ohakea at N.M0 a.m. and was making good jirogress despite a strong westerlv wind when at 1(1 'a.m. it was notieed that something was wrong with tlie oi! cooling system in tlie inner starboard engine. The/propeller of the damaged engine was " f'eathered " to lessen drag and the aircraft tnrned back for Xew Zealand, making the return trip in one Iiour. The Mercury touched down at 11 a.111., with oil leaking profusely from tlie idle niotor. An earlier report that the damaged engine was being removed for repaii: was denied by an officer at the station. Tlie trouble had been traced and repairs were being quickly effected, he said. Tlie.
