■ fflonthly Sitting in Levin The . November sitting of the Magistrate's Court took place ih Levin' yfesterday. Mr. A. M, Goulding, S.M., presided and among the eases d'ealt with were the following: — " Liquor at Dances The police campaign to stamp out drinking at dances in the district resulted in six men being charged with having liquor in tne vicinity of a dance hall. They were Patrick Francis Connolly Barrat, Charles John Petersen, Walter Walker, Trevor Osborne Riehardson, Colin George Evans and William Lay. Each defendant was convicted and fined £4, with costs of varying amouiits. Driving Without Care Arising out of an accident at Poroutawhao on September 12, Rex Allan Henman was cnarged wirh driying a truck without due care' and attention.
•Sergeant \V. Gr3/ing6r ss,icl defendant was driving the truck which struck a car. Henman did not stop after the collision, but the car driver had taken the number of his truck and he had been located. A fine of £3 10s, with 10s costs, was imposed, the magistrate commenting that it was fortunate the car had not been thrown off the road. Failed to Keep to Left Failing to keep to the left cost Forbes Finlay Gilmore (Mr. J. P. Bertram) £3", with 10s costs. Inspector M. Kehoe said defendant drove a car round a corner at Manakau on August 23 and all four wheels were over the white line. Mr. Bertram submitted that the corner where the incident happened was not a dangerous one. The magistrate remarked that this was one of the worst offences. The motorist who committed it was Ln danger himself and endangered others. Lighting Breaches For riding an unlighted' cycle in Levin on October 8 Errol McAuliffe pa'id a penalty of £1 10s, with 10s costs. Allen Henry Fisher was charged with driving a truck in Levin on September 13 when it did not have a tail light. Inspector Kehoe said the vehicle was being driven from Dannevirke to Wellington, and it had neither bulb or red glass in the tail lamp. A fine of £2 10s, with 10s costs, was imposed. Had No Number Plates Driving a motor vehicle without number plates resulted in David Hammond Murray being 'fined 10s, with 10s costs. Inspector Kehoe said the olfence happened on August 27." Defendant 'had told him he was on his way to re-register the vehicle, which he had subsequently done. For a similar offence on August 7 Robert Charles Blenkhorn was also fined 10s, with 10s costs. No Driver's Lieense Arthur Murray Boswell was charged, firstly, with driving a car when he was not the holder of a current driver's lieense, and, secondly, with supplying misleading information. Inspector Kehoe said he stopped defendant at 8.15 p.m. on Septem.ber 9 because his car only had one light. Asked for his lieense, Boswell had produced oue which he said was his, but on being further questioned admitted that it was his father's. He had since obtained one. The penalty was a fine of £2, with 10s costs, for giving misleading information and £1, with 10s costs, on the charge of having no driver's lieense. Excessive Speed A fine of £3 10s, wiih 12s costs, was inflicted on Robert Stanley Beazer for exceeding the speed limit of 40 m.p.h. at Ohau on Sap— cember 3. Inspector Kehoe said he had checked' defendant's speed at 55 m.p.h. Possession Claim H. C. Hensman and F. E. Powell (Mr. J. Todd) claimed £15 12s 6d arrears of rent and possession of a dwelling from James Walker. In evidence, Mr. Todd said the dwelling was in Shannon. The rent was 12s 6d weekly and the tenancy was commenced on January 19, 1944. The rent had been paid regulaiiy up to the end of last year, but from then on it had been allowed to go into arrears. * An order v/as made for possession forthwith, the warrant to be sospended as long as current rent aacl 10s a week of the arrears was paid. Civil Cases Judgment was entered in the following civil cases: E. H. Green v. E. H. Jacobs £2 10s 5d, costs 16s,solicitor's fee 15s 6d; J. B. B. Cormack v. B. M. Marshall £5, costs £1 8s, solicitor's fee £1 . 10s 6d; Wm. Davie v. W. Pou £21 ls lld, costs £1 19s, solicitor's fee £2 11s 6d.
