Speaking as one who spent some of the most stremious years of his life fighting against the British Empire in its old form, Field Marshal Smuts deelared that the British Commonwealth pattern might be the type ol: Oovernment which would best snit the twin ideals oi: freedom and peace for which the world was seeking. Field Marslial Smuts added that the British Commonwealth of the , tweittioth eeutury was very .difl'erent from that of the nineteenth eentury. If'Europe or a large part of Europe eould form a union in whieh the constitutiona] prineiples of the British Commonwcaltli eould prevail, the world might see that continent emerge from its conftisions and miserihs and realise its freedom and peace in a renaissanee more glorious than ever before.
