BERNBOROUGH RECOVERED
w MELBOURNE CUP HORSES IN REVIEW Received Weduesday, 7 p.m. MELBOURNE, Oct. 30. Bernborougk showed byhis gallop at Cauliieid that he has fully recovered. Ridden by his new raee jockey, W. Briscoe, the champion rau six furlongs in 1.16| and the last half mile in 50. Briscoe said subsequently that riding Bernborough in comparison witli other good liorses he had ridden, was like comparing a modern racing car with a 1914 tourer. Despite Plying Duke's moderate performance in the Cox Plate on Saturday, the colt is still most popular in the Derby. The colt has obviously improved by that race and is expected to be hard to defeat in the Derby. Monmouth, the stable companion of Plying Dulce, who impressed with his hnishing effort in the Cox Plate, has injured a foreleg. There has been no improvement since and he is a very unlikelv starter in the Melbourne Cup. M. McCarten, trainer of Monmonth, advised II. Badger, his jockey, to seek another mount i;or the Cup. Two Grand, who ran third in the Caultield Cup, has done splendidly on the traeks since. Connections are verv conJident he will win in the Derby. Star Act also impressed in traek work this week. Proctor, who is well supported 'in the Melbourne Cup, was beaten in a .traek trial by Concerto, the A.J.C. Derby winner,'over seven furlongs. .Pirst In, who gave her trainer some trouble a few. days ago, showed a great improvement. Hhe moved freely in t,he mile gallop at Mentone, finishing strongly in the last three furrongs. Her trainer, J. Accola, is pleased with the tnare's rapid recovery. Sea Patrol who unluckilv was defeated by Invasion Chief and New Yorker at Oaul field, galloped, splendidly at Epsom. He is considered to be one of the hardest to defeat in tlie Cantala Stakes. V.R.C. officials state that there is no likelihood of a ballot in the. Melbourne Cup. At present 59 liorses reniain. The officials state that at least 35 will be Eillowod tn start. There was a record
field of 38 in 1890 when Carbine won. Only six times since then has the field exceeded 30, The biggest field in eomparatively Tecent years was 31 when King Inooda won in 1922. Stenelaus, fourth in the Moonee Valley Cup, evidentlv improved in that race. He has pleased his trainer, T. Lewis, since, Stenelaus stands plenty of racing and is improving eaeh race. Magnificent, another who looks better after recent raees, is likely to be one of the popular candidates in the Melbourne Cup. Great Victory pulled up lame after a gallop and is unlikely to be a Cup starter. Rainbird. and Silver Link, first and second in the Cup last year, have been withdrawn from the cup. Both show very disappointing form this season. -
