Miss Luxford's Visit A decision to take part in any civic welcome that might be accorded Miss Nola Luxford, Anzac hostess in New York, was made by the executive of the Palmerston North branch of the Returned Services' Association at a meeting held last Tuesday night. Intimation had been reeeived from the Dominion Headquarters that the association would be co-operating with civic authorities in welcoming Miss Luxford. Waterspout Near Nelson Holiday-makers at Torrent Bay, Nelson, on Sunday witnessed a large waterspout travelling down Tasman Bay. A huge vortex of water was seen at about 3.15 p.m. travelling along the horizon in a southerly direction. Observers could see the whirlwind effect of the water being drawn from the sea on the outer edge into a black, swirli ing pillar. The waterspout appeared to be losing intensity rapidly | when it disappeared from view. j That Song Again An accusation that members of i the Labour Party sang the "Red Flag" in the lobbies of Parliament House after the division 011 the abolition of the country quota, was made in Levin last night by the National Party candidate, Mr. J. J. Maher, during the course of an address. "The good old Union Jack will do me," he added, pointing to the British flag on the wall. "If they love their Red Flag so mucn let them go to Russia — the longer they stay there the better." S Capital Punishment The Government supnorted the ! death sentence on the Nazi war ' criminals yet it would not give the i people of New Zealand the protec- | tion of capital punishment for murderers in the Dominion, said : the National Party candidate for j the Otaki district, Mr. J. J. Maher, when speaking in Levin last night. i "These lurking monsters will have I to be dealt with adequately. A mur- ; derer is a murderer whether he is a Nazi or a New Zealander, and the only cure is to exterminate him as quickly as possible." Bowling Club's Teams The first round of the 1946-47 bowling season for the Bowater Memorial Trophy will be played on Saturday and the following are the teams which will represent the Levin Club: — At Central green: Witherow, "Carmichael, Haswell and Meads (s) ; Young, R. Jones, J. Wilson and Wenham (s) ; George, Aldridge, H. Walker and McClune (s). At Levin green: J. Todd, H. Jones, Fitzgerald and Hill'(s); G. Wilson, Whitham, Nicholson and Lemmon (s) ; D. P. Todd, McGarry, McCarty and L. J. Hunter (s). Maori Singer for Abroad Advice has been rcceived by the Mayor of Hamilton (Mr. H. D. Caro) and Mrs. Hilda Ross, M.P., that the Government has consented t'o -assist Inia Te Wiata, the Maori singer from Ngaruawahia (and formerly of Otaki), to go abroad for three years' tui tion. The( Minister of Internal Affairs (Mr. Parry) , to whom representations were made, states that the High Commissioner in London (Mr.
Jordan) has been asked to provide every possible facility. It is hoped that Inia Te Wiata will leave for Londcn in February. An appeal to support the singer's going abroad was made recently to the Maori people by Sir Apirana Ngata. War Medal Ribbon Following the announcement last week that the ribbon of the War Medal would be issued to all persons who served for 28 days or longer on a full-time basis, Base Records has reeeived numerous requests for an issue from discharged persons. It has now been pointed out by an official of Base Records that the ribbon can be issued only to discharged persons who wear some type of uniform and are therefore able to wear the ribbon. Such persons would include commissionaires, tramwaymen or uniformed messengers. Other civilians should not applv for issue. They will receive the ribbon in duc course when the medal itself il | issued.
