WELLJJn (xTOiN , Uct. Wellington, Auckland and Otago tied for first place in the national men's indoor basketball ehampionships which coneluded at Wellington today. The ■fournament was the first under the auspices of the newly formed New Zealand Association, having previously been run by the Y.M.C.A., whieh has j been responsible for mucli of the j growtli and popularity of the sport. J The post-section play between the three leading teams provided some j brilliant basketball. Otago first enierged as possible winners by defeating a f stroiig Auckland combination 37 — -3-1. ' Staging a nutgriificent final quarter, ! Auckland defeated Wellington by 40— | 3S but always had the upper hand. j The final "game between Wellington ; and Otago was notable for the grandi stand finish by Wellington who ran i into the lead in the iinal quarter for j the first tinie in the rnatch, to go on to l a elear cut victory. I Lack of time prevented a North- ! South rnatch being played but the fol- | lowing teams were announced by the j selectors, Messrs R. O. Johnson and 0. i F. Briggs: — North Island: S. The selectors also announced the | following New Zealand side: Centres, J. Paterson, captain (Otago), S. Hunt (Auckland); shoots, G. Campbell (Auckland), G. Milne (Wellington), N. Williams (Otago); guards, L. Williams (Otago), J. Altman (Auckland), B O 'ahanghnessy (Hamilton). Today 's results were: — Otago 60 v Wairarapa 28, Gisborne 40 v. Masterton 25, Ganterbury 41 v. Southland 30 Wellington 37 v. Wanganui 17, Hamilton 61 v. Wanganui 19, Auckland 57 v Morrinsville 35, Palmerston North 7 i v. Wairarapa 25, Hutt Valley 68 v Nelson 52. Post-section play: Otago 37 v. Auck land 34, Auckland 40 v. Wellington 88 Wellington 38 v. Otago 31.
