% In this issue appears an intimation .from the Commissioner of Taxes that an instalment of the combined Social and National Security charge on income other than salary of wages derived during the year ended March 31, 1946, falls due on Noveihber 1. Opossum Skins The reduction in the price of the licenses for the taking of opossum skins this year has resulted in a total of 96,000 more skins being sent to the saies in Dunedin so far than for the whole of last season. In all 437,000 skins have reached the market in Dunedin in two national saies this season, compared with j 341,000 in three saies last season. | "Burnt In" "A great deal has been said about I the burning of the soldiers' votes j at the last election," said Mr. J. Honeymoon Couple's Misadventure j When a horse fioat attached to a I car which was negotiating ' Whiti worth corner, on the Hamilton - i Rotorua highway, swung out on the bend it hit a* passing road service i bus. A window of the bus was i broken and the flying glass hit the I honeymoon couple, Mr. and Mrs. P. : H. Crozier, of Auckland, causing ! slight injuries. When Mr. and Mrs. : Crozier were being taken to the j Rotorua Hospital in an ambulance i a tyre blew out and the rest of ihe i trip was made in a police car. After treatment at the hospital they were discharged. Ready Money For Car I A surprise awaited a motorist on I emerging from an hotel in Hamil- : ton on a recent morning when- he I found a stranger, occupying ihe I driving seat of his car. On being j asked the reason for his presence I the stranger inquired whether the I motorist desired to sell the vehicle. i The owner demurred, but eventuali ly they decided to go for a short j trip. The stranger asked the owner ' to name a price for the car, a small model of pre-war vintage, and the owner suggested £310. To his surprise the stranger immediately produced 31 £10 notes and handed them over. Isolated Defence Post Another isoiated and little-known coastal defence post, the radar station-at Cape Rodney, is to be disposed of. Seven buildings with-. all fittings are to be sold, m addition to a control tower containing 3700ft of Oregon pine, a 10,000gallon reservoir and over 1000ft. of pipeline. The station was first occupied about the middle of 1943 aria remamed in use until soon after the end of the war with Japan. It was one of a series of stations used for the detection of shipping in the Hauraki Gulf and for locating aircraft. It was manned by about 40.naval and air force personnel. Local Bands at Palmerston North The McKenzie tartan of the Horowhenua Pipe Band made a colourful showing at the band festival held during the Labour weekend under the auspices of "the committee of the Palmerston North City Silver Band. In all there were 10 bands present at the function, which was held in the showgrounds before a-very large audience of lovers of band music. The only other pipe band in attendance was Manawatu Pipe Band, which, during the coqrse of the afternoon, played in conjuction with the Levin band. The Levin Municipal Silver Band's display was of a particularly. high standard, and received well-deserved applause at each of its performances.
